Consumer Price Index -June- 2017 (2) The Central Statistics Department of the Ministry of National Planning & Development (MoNP&D), has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of Jun 2017 (Base year 2012=100).
Highlights of CPI, June 2017
Annual Inflation
The Annual Headline Inflation for the year ending June 2017 raise at 12.2 percent compared to the 7.1 percent recorded during the year ended May 2017.
The rise in Annual Headline Inflation was due to the high Annual Food Crops Inflation which rose to 6.0 percent for the year ending June 2017 compared to 2.8 percent recorded for the year ended May 2017. The driver of Annual Food Crops Inflation were Meat Inflation that increased to 31.1 percent for the year ending June 2017 compared to the 4.6 percent registered during the year ended May 2017. In addition, Milk, cheese and eggs inflation registered a 30.2 percent rise for the year ending June 2017 compared to the 18.1 percent recorded for the year ended May 2017.
The Annual Core Inflation also rose to 12.1 percent for the year ending June 2017 compared to the 7.2 percent recorded for the year ended May 2017. This was driven by the Energy Fuel and Utilities Inflation that registered a 22.3 percent for the year ending June 2017 compared to the 13.0 percent recorded during the year ended May 2016. Other services n.e.c. inflation, however, increased to 10.2 percent for the year ending June 2017 compared to the 4.6 percent recorded for the year ended May 2017.
In addition, the Annual Energy, Fuels and Utilities (EFU) Inflation increased to 23.3 percent for the year ending June 2017 compared to the 13.0 percent recorded during the year ended May 2017. The drivers were Annual Inflation for Charges – Use of Electricity inflation that recorded 11.9 percent for the year ending June 2017 compared to 11.7 percent recorded for the year ended May 2017. In addition, was Paraffin or Kerosene inflation that decreases to 7.7 percent for the year ending June 2017 compared to 8.3 percent recorded in May 2017, and Water private supply inflation to 9.5 percent for the year ending June 2017 compared to minus 8.7 percent recorded in May 2017?
2. Monthly Inflation
The Monthly Headline Inflation for June 2017 rose by 3.0 percent from 2.7 percent rise recorded in May 2017. This was due to Monthly Core Inflation that increased 2.8 percent during June 2017 from the 2.5 percent recorded in May 2017. Similarly, the EFU Inflation rose by 4.6 percent in June 2017 from the increase 4.3 percent recorded in May 2017. However, the Monthly Food Crops & Related Items Inflation increased by 3.4 percent for the month of June 2017 from the 3.2 percent rise recorded during May 2017.
