Consumer Price Index -March 2017The Central Statistics Department of the Ministry of National Planning & Development (MoNP&D), has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of March 2017 (Base year 2012=100).

Comparison of the CPI of March 2017 with the CPI of March 2016 (Y-o-Y)

The Annual Headline Inflation for the year ending February(Y-o-Y) 2017 was recorded at 1.6 percent while the annual food inflation was registered at 3.1 percent and the Non-food inflation was recorded at 1.0 percent.

The [Y-o-Y] price changes for the divisions with positive annual inflation are as follows: “Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages by 3.2 percent”;“Clothing and Footwear 2.0 percent “Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels 3.9 percent” “Health 21.9 percent”; “Communication by 9.1 percent”, and Recreation and culture 1.1 percent On contrary, The [Y-o-Y] price changes for the divisions that registered a drop in the annual inflation are the following: Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics by minus 5.9 percent, “Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance 4.3 percent, Transport minus 18.2 percent, Education by 0.9 percent, Restaurants and Hotels by 3.7 percent, “Miscellaneous goods and services 2.4 percent”.

Comparison of the CPI of March 2017 with the CPI of February 2017 (M-o-M)

Monthly basis inflation of the CPI March 2017 comparing February 2017 all items increase by 1.0 percent as a result of an increase in prices, food prices increase by 1.2 percent and non-food prices increase 0.8 percent.
An analysis on [M-o-M] basis of CPI for March 2017 comparing with that of February 2017, shows that there are five divisions whose prices have generally increase, while six divisions dropped and the rest one division remained as it in the month of Feb 2017, as listed below:
Division that remain as it as follows: Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages 1.1 percent. Division that increase in March are: Clothing and Footwear” 1.9 percent, “Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels”1.4 percent, Health 4.0 percent, Communication 2.2 percent, Recreation and Culture 1.4 percent,
Divisions whose prices have decline are: Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco & Narcotics by 0.1 percent, Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance 0.0 percent, Miscellaneous Goods and Services 0.2 percent, and the following divisions declined below zero Transport minus 4.3 percent, Education minus 1.3 percent, and Restaurants and Hotels minus 1.5 percent.
