1.0 HIGH LIGHTS OF CPI FOR MARCH 2020

The Central Statistics Department of the Ministry of Planning &National Development (MoPND), has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the Month of March 2020 (Base year 2012=100).
The Annual Headline Inflation for the year ending March 2020 is recorded as 5.9 percent compared to the 5.0 percent recorded for the year ended February 2020.
The decreased Annual Core Inflation of 5.1 percent for the year ending March 2020 compared to 5.2 percent for the year ended February 2020. This was driven by the Maize flour inflation decreased that 21.7 percent for the year ending March 2020 compared to 22.4 percent recorded for the ended year February 2020. Similarly, Sorghum and grain flour inflation decreased to 10.0 percent for the year ending March 2020 compared to 11.0 percent recorded for the year ended February 2020. In particular, Yoghurt inflation decreased by 3.5 percent for the year ending March 2020 compared to 6.3 percent recorded for the year ended February 2020. Also, Services inflation increased by 2.1 percent for the year ending March 2020 compared to 1.4 percent recorded for the year ended February 2020.

Annual inflation of Food Crops increased 16.7 percent for the year ending March 2020 compared to 9.3 percent recorded for the year ended February 2020. The drivers of changes were oranges; which increased to 35.7 percent for the year ending March 2020 compared 13.8 percent registered for the year ending February 2020. Meanwhile, the tangerines inflation registered an increase of 34.7 percent for the year ending March 2020 compared to the 2.1 percent recorded for the year ended February 2020.Similarly, Green paper increased 19.3 percent for the ending year march 2020 compared to the 15.5 percent for the year ended February 2020. In addition, the Garlic (Toon) inflation increased 31.3 percent for the ending year March 2020 compared to 12.0 percent for the year ended February 2020.
2.0    MONTHLY INFLATION
The monthly headline inflation for March 2020 increased 1.1 percent compared to the 0.6 percent recorded February 2020.
Monthly food inflation of March 2020 increased 2.1 percent compared 0.4 percent recorded in February 2020.
Food crops and related items monthly inflation increased 7.8 percent in March 2020 compared 1.5 percent recorded in February 2020. In addition core monthly inflation decreased 0.2 percent during March 2020 compared 0.5 percent recorded in February 2020. Similarly, the monthly Energy Fuel and Utilities inflation increased by 1.6 percent for the month of March 2020 compared 0.1 percent recorded during February 2020.
